Chateau de Richebois, Charny, Yonne, Burgundy, France

"Workin' on mysteries without any clues..." I'm not really a Bob Seger fan, but his lyric seems to apply to this listing for this French chateau.

Why is this named the Chateau de Richebois?
Hmm, good question, but let's not mention that name in the listing.

When was it built? Sometime in the 19th century. Old. That's all you need to know.

What's the address?  It's in Charny in Yonne, but note that Yonne is also known as Charny-Orée-de Puisaye.

You mention the chateau features one of its owners' coat of arms? Yes, but we didn't take a picture of it.

There are stories here, but they're not going to tell them to you too quickly. Or at all.

What is that weird rope on the tower?

What is this key to? Why did you take a picture of it?

Where does this door lead?

What's upstairs?

Why are there only photos of 2 rooms out of a 15 bedroom, 5,220 square feet chateau, and why are they making me think of The Sound of Music?

For some reason, this living room with the pine trees and iron railings makes me feel like stepping out onto the terrace at the Von Trapp house.

In real life, that terrace is at the Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, as is this room:

...which serves as nice decorating inspiration for our one straightforward listing photo:

So why am I also including another inspiration photo? Because I like it too much not to show it to you!

I'm not tight-lipped with my information and inspiration, unlike the listing.

Speaking of the listing, a few final questions remain. Why did you make a point of mentioning the guy who acquired the castle in 1890? He was the nephew of Pierre Larousse-- basically France's version of Merriam Webster.

What is a montargis castle and a giboyous forest? Montargis is a town 33 minutes away, and giboyous means game or hunting. That rope from earlier is a lightning rod.

Well, at least that clears up some of the mystery.

A tip of my hat to a commenter at Old House Dreams who was able to at least unearth the chateau name and old postcards. If you're young, restless, and bored and like mysteries without clues, the listing is here
