Kanawha

Welcome to Kanawha Avenue today in Charleston, West Virginia.  This house has a scenic view overlooking the Kanawha River and the majestic West Virginia State Capitol Building, the tallest building in the state.

{Google Maps}

Kanawha is Iroquois for "water way" or "canoe way".  I knew you'd be curious.

The home was built in 1910, so I believe the pocket doors off the foyer are original, although probably not originally painted:

I found it hard to suggest improving on the existing pretty runner and tone on tone striped wallpaper.
Instead, I looked for coordinating schemes and found this:

Blue and white touches for our home would be classic and a nice compliment to the river view.

Here is the living room we glimpsed above:

Pretty, but a little bland.  We could add architectural interest to the far wall, like this:

3 words.  Blue leopard ottoman.  I also wanted to add some weight to that far wall, because directly across the hall is this room:

I'm not sure if it was previously used as an office, but I'm going to suggest a dining room, like this:

Imagine the mirror where our window is, and the built-ins painted and remodeled into a buffet.

The kitchen has obviously been updated recently, and quite well:

Let's just add some blue and white accessories and reconfigure the pot light over the island to a pendant:

Oh yeah, and add those sleek barstools that match the island so well.

As for the laundry room, it makes a pretty before picture:

However, the finishes below would suit our scheme much better:

Moving on to the master bedroom...

{Christina Murphy}

...beautiful linens repeat our scheme in a crisp and classic way.

Finally, here's an idea for this cute upstairs landing, which features the same finishes as the foyer:

Speaking of porches, check out the awesome black & white striped awning on ours:

Fortunately for us, blue and white will mix very nicely with that :

To wrap things up, it seems only appropriate to include a little more Waterlogue of our "water way":

Have a wonderful week, friends!

  1. Vicki,
    I may have said this before. BEST. House. Ever. I love the location, wouldn't it be fun to live on a waterway? And you've taken this lovely home and made it the best it could possibly be. I love blue and white and the rooms you've decorated are perfect.
    Enjoy the week, great job!

  2. Hi Karen- This time of year always renews my appreciation for blue and white. :) You would like Brooks & Falotico Architects- I was pretty sidetracked by their portfolio. Have a lovely week!
